The elevator pitch comes into its own on national television!
Well, the annual dose of TV reality show, The Apprentice, has now finished after a gruelling 12 week run. For all those who do not watch this fanciful piece of human drama, it is a search of young business people to find a suitable apprentice for Lord Alan Sugar, the Business Guru. The only difference this year is that the apprentice has been replaced by the need for a business partner to start a business supported by Lord Sugar to the tune of £250,000!It is always an entertaining and light hearted whimsy through various "business" tasks which are adroitly filmed and edited for television fodder. As the series progresses, it throws up many TV moment gems which are mercilessly pounced on by all and sundry.
From a face to face business perspective however, there was however a business gem in the final of the programme.
Here is the set up. The four final candidates were asked to prepare their "business plan" and it was given to a panel of high level interviewers who aid Lord Sugar with their opinions of the candidates.
In this particular case a young entrepreneur interviewing the candidates asked each of them, before he even allowed them into the room, to stand and give him an "elevator pitch" of their business idea.
As you can imagine, this really put the candidates on the spot and forced them to try and be succinct and compelling about their particular business idea in just 30 seconds. In this way it was relatively easy to find out who had internalised the business plan and who was just a master of 'BS'. A highly revealing business tool used in a great context.
